30 Days of Television: Day 29…

CURRENT SHOW OBSESSION

Leverage. I’d never even seen an episode of this show before buying the first two seasons on DVD. The cast (Gina Bellman, Christian Kane), producer (Dean Devlin) and guest stars (Mark Sheppard, Wil Wheaton) were enough to convince me that it would be a worthwhile purchase; they weren’t wrong. From the very first episode - set against the beautiful backdrop of Chicago - it’s pacy, clever, unique, witty and lots of fun.

30 Days of Television: Day 28…

FIRST SHOW OBSESSION

Blackadder. I remember my parents watching this when I was growing up and I loved the ridiculous/slapstick component to it. But as I got older and understood more of the dialogue, as well as their bastardisation of history, I fell in love with that, too. Rowan Atkinson, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie remain three of my all-time favourite actors to this day because of that series and I still quote it religiously.

30 Days of Television: Day 13…
FAVOURITE CHILDHOOD SHOW
Round The Twist. I was a huge reader when I was growing up and discovering the Paul Jennings books in primary school was like striking gold! They were short, entertaining, funny and so colloquially Australian. When most of these gems were made into a series, I was in heaven. I have no interest in the inferior modern version as they weren’t based on the stories, but I must have rewatched the first two seasons several dozen times over the course of my childhood - and still enjoy them to this day.

30 Days of Television: Day 8…
A SHOW EVERYONE SHOULD WATCHThe IT Crowd. The BBC are renowned for presenting quality shows and this is no exception. We’re introduced to Jen as she talks her way into the role of IT supervisor (despite knowing nothing about computers) and is relegated to the dank basement where she meets her tech-savvy/socially-inept team of Roy and Moss. Hilarity ensues. From classic recurring lines (“Have you tried turning it off and on again?”) to awkward outings (“A gay musical called ‘Gay’?”) to ‘breaking the Internet’, this is one of the few shows that can actually make me laugh out loud.

A SHOW NEEDING MORE VIEWERS
Chuck. Not that it would make any difference considering they’ve just embarked on their final season, but this show deserves to go out with a bang! Fantastic cast, well written, excellent selection of music and a great use of the action / comedy genre. Personally, I feel like their strongest arcs and episodes were in the first three seasons but I’m hoping season five can bring back some of that old-school magic.
